This Autobiography from Rumer Godden is about her' life after she returned from India to live in England. This book talks about her marriage to James, her many houses she lived in and her conversion to Catholicism. She wrote many of her more famous books after Black Narcissus in England in including Greengage Summer, The River, which Jean Renoir made into a movie, China Court, and this House of Brede. What makes her a great novelist is the complexity of her characters and the vivid descriptions of places and times.
While she is a older Writer I think it is worth the time to read many of her books, especially if you wanted to understand the British Mentality in India in the 1900's and their attitude towards the Indian populace.

An autobiography
If you are a fan of Rumer Godden you will probably find this book interesting. The chronology jumps around a bit and it is not a book that one can read quickly, but it is worth it for the insights into her life and personality. If you are not a fan I doubt this autobiography will make you one and that is a great loss - she is an extremely good writer of fiction.

Rumer never fails
I have always loved the books by Rumer Godden, and this one is no exception. Part of what I am today is definitely the result of reading her lovely works. And my grown-up daughters love Godden just as much as I do.

One of Rumer's best
"House with Four Rooms" is the second half of Rumer Godden's autobiography, I believe. I got this copy for my daughter as I already have one in my own library. I love all of Godden's books. "China Court "is my all-time favorite Rumer Godden title. It is a gentle story that weaves the lives of an entire family in threads throughout the narrative while introducing a new character that is involved in a (not too sappy) love story. I have read this book several times, and each time, I'm sad I don't have another to pick up that is just like it. I have nearly all of Godden's books. Some are still in print while others can be found through businesses like Alibris (I prefer the old hardbacks to paperbacks). These are the books that you want your grandchildren to read (I'm making a list for them already--the baby girl is not even one yet and the other is in utero!); some for when they're older (like "The Peacock Summer"). "An Episode of Sparrows," "This House of Brede," "The Dark Horse," and so on, not to mention Godden's two-part autobiography: if you haven't read these, get them. You'll be glad you did.
