Ruth Rendell writes fabulous books. Besides the Inspector Wexler series, her other books are just as good.

Gruesome
Ruth Rendell is more than a first-rate author. Her prose is electric, her depth astonishing. But in this novel she proceeds from one sociopath to another in--yes--wonderful language, but a terrible acquaintance with the most sordid and squalid possibilities of decayed human nature. Somewhere along the line, I questioned whether I could reasonably continue reading it. In a case like this, you skip to the end to make sure, and that proved really and truly the end. What an incredible creative imagination, but not for me.
