This 1st edition is a great read w/much details & explanations for specific tactics. Description of battles are detailed & Rommel enjoys promoting himself, but never lacks to give credit to his subordinates when apt. Maps are to the point and appropriate. A good history lesson for WWI and an excellent insight to Rommel's thinking, planning & strategy in future WW II battles.

One of the best books written.
A wonderful description of Rommel in WWI. Its amazing how articulate Rommel is in describing preparations for attack, use of terrain, change of plans on the spot and other details involved in executing orders. At the end of each battle sequence is an observations section in which the lessons to be drawn are dispassionately stated. From this book its clear that Rommel acquired most of the military characteristics amd experiences that helped him become a great commander in WWII. His emphasis on reconnaissance, deception, and surprise are all described in detail. Another great thing in this book are the maps (actually Rommel's hand sketches) showing terrain and lines of attack. Whenever I read it, I can hardly stop. "Attacks" gives a completely different picture of World War I, and is a must have for any historian, strategian, or just someone who wants to read a great book.
