Cinderella is one of the oldest and best-known fairy tales. Mistreated by her step-sisters, Cinderella is left to clean the house while her sisters attend a ball. With the help of her fairy god mother, Cinderella goes to the ball. At the ball the prince is taken with her beauty and generosity. In a hurry to get home before the clock strikes twelve, Cinderella accidentally leaves a glass slipper. The prince finds the slipper and eventually matches the slipper with Cinderella. The prince takes Cinderella to be his bride. Barbara McClintock's version of Cinderella is based on Charles Perrault's seventeenth-century fairy tale. In this version, the palace, costumes, and hairdos reflect France in the time of Louis XIV. Readers will also observe that Cinderella's cat appears in most of the exquisite illustrations found in this book. In sum, this is an excellent version of a classic fairy tale ideal for both children and adults.
