The second book in the Lonesome Dove quartet, Comanche Moon, which follows on from Dead Man's Walk, follows ranchers Gus and Call in their bitter struggle to protect the advancing West frontier against the defiant Comanches, courageously determined to defend their territory and their way of life. It showcases Larry McMurtry's strong affinity for the landscape and its inhabitants with a deeply felt lyrical intensity. On the wild Texas frontier where barbarism and civilization come in many forms, Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call are pitched into the long, bitter, bloody fighting under the command of Captain Inish Scull. When Scull's favourite horse is stolen by the Comanches, he decides to track him down, leaving Gus and Call in charge. However, on their return to Austin, Gus is greeted by the news that his sweetheart is to marry another man and Call finds that the town's most notorious woman is desperate to settle down with him and become respectable. When Scull's wealthy wife demands that her errant husband be brought home, with feelings akin to relief the two men set off once more into the vast, untamed plains . . . Continue the series set in the American West with the Pulitzer Prize winning Lonesome Dove.

This book supposedly leads up to the book Lonesome Dove, but I personally think that another book could be written betwee Comanche Moon and Lonesome Dove. The book is divided into three books with each book having its own main characters. Captain Inish Scull is the eccentric leader of the Texas Rangers as the book starts out, and he is out after the Comanche Kicking Wolf, the notorious horse stealer of all the Comanche's. Captain Scull has a notorious wife who "humps" and man she can get to hold still. She is beautiful and very rich, and therefore although everyone knows her by reputation, she is still considered respectable. (compared to the whores like Maggie) By the comparison the writer makes betweeen the two women, it makes you wonder if McMurtry might hate women. Captain Scull leaves the troop and proceeds to walk after Kicking Wolf when Kicking Wolf steals Sculls horse. Before Scull leaves, he promotes both Woodrow Call and Augustus McRae to Captain. The book develops the story between Captain Call and the whore Maggie, who gets pregnant with Calls baby. The book also reveals the more intimate relationship between Captain McRae and his love Clara, and why she doesn't marry him. There is also the Comanche chief Buffalo Hump, who leads the last great raid against the whites through Texas to the sea, and the Black Vaquero, the Mexican leader of a notorious band of outlaws, who knows more terrible ways to torture a man than the indians. Lets not forget the notorious son of Buffalo Hump, Blue Duck. What a villian he is. Read the book and sort them all out for yourself. It's good reading.
