Seller's Description:
Acceptable. This book is acceptable. It is a useful copy but not pretty. There may be writing, loose pages, or a damaged cover. paperbackUsed-Acceptable1998.
At first, I was scandalized by the assertions regarding the recent finds by the Dead See and Ephesus. They do exist but hardly confound modern scholarship regarding Christianity and seem merely to validate descriptions of the areas during the first and second centuries AD. The book, published by a reactionary Roman Catholic business, aims at reestablishing the authority of the Vatican which has suffered from changes issuing from Vatican 2, scholarship, scandals and the general impact of secularism. Given the setting, the pontiff of the tale is clearly John Paul II, and the President a figure born of an expanded European Union. The malignant essence of the President represents the threat of world government (a right-wing fear) and its accompaniment of secular culture which will replace religion as a guide to mankind. The signs at present are 1) that population growth is fated to lead to population decline, 2)present First-World nations are doomed to drown under waves of Third-World migrants and 3)power is moving from the West to the East, a rejuvenated Orient led by China. The only uncertainty at present is whether the evolution of AI will prove to do much more damage than good. The religion of Father Elijah (and the author) is a pablum for those seeking a happy ending. Remember the words of Stephen Hawking in The Grand Design, "These are matters with which philosophy concerned itself, but philosophy is dead." Treat the book as entertainment. It is certainly better in this regard than most fiction out there.
