Simply stated, the two-volume set by Casey, Craig and Panish has withstood the test of time. Perhaps because it eschews mathematical minutae, it manages to teach the fundamentals of heterstructure laser theory and technology and not confuse the lessons with less important details. Most of the references are to original pioneering work, or in-depth analysis, where one can find the details, should one choose.
