Second in trilogy about the Murray girls. This is Avery's story. I must say - DELIGHTFUL. This book is filled to brimming with humor. It is surely seen in many books by Howell that the Murray gals and the gals the men marry all have sharp tongues and wit. This book however, is filled in each chapter with such humor. While travelling with Gilly (her book is last one in series - 8 years or so later) in France, her mother's kinsmen are set upon again by the DeVeaux. She is kidnapped and traded to Cameron to pay a debt with Gilly. As a prisoner, it is found who she is and she is to be ransomed back to her father (Nigel). While making their way back to Scotland from France danger lurks. It is in this book that Gilly's singing talent is first discovered when Avery falls ill after saving a drowning boy and Gilly sings to her during her fevered days. Avery falls for Cameron and he for her - but he is set upon a course he cannot falter from when he makes his ransom plot. This is not just a regular ransom plot. He does not wish coin for Avery, but her brother Payton. Cameron's sister has made claim that Payton has raped her and left her with child. Cameron wishes to have Payton make an honest woman of his sister. During their journey - he falls for Avery, but duty binds him to seeing his plot through. There are escape attempts, Avery and Gilly save his clan time and again from danger with warnings rather than escaping. They heal the sick and tend the wounded - all the way knowing the plot and that they will be ransomed. Payton comes, Avery leaves and Cameron finds out the truth about his sister's story. He an Payton set about on a scheme to get Avery back. You will have to read to find out what it is - but even that part of the story has a great deal of humor.
