A romantic adventure novel set in South Africa, following Jess Croft, an orphan living on an ostrich farm on the Great Transvaal Veldt. When Englishman Captain John Niel arrives to try his hand at farming, they are drawn together and torn apart. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer best known for his adventure romances set in exotic locations. With original verse in Chapter XXXIII [removed from all alter printings] and faint inverted comma before 'King' on title page. Scott 6: Whatmore F5. London: Smith, Elder & Co. (1887). In the original red cloth binding. Externally, smart with light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark to the board. Fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good.
