I have heard Donald Harington's Staymore, Arkansas praised for several years and really had high hopes for this book and Harington's entire body of work. It really wasn't what I expected. I am a fiercely proud Arkansan and get oh so very tired of the barefoot and pregnant, do you have indoor plumbing and did you marry your cousin jokes. It quickly becomes tedious and is seldom original. Imagine my chagrin to find that Harington offered up the same nonsense. Sure sometimes these things can be true - anywhere, but they don't need to be lauded as the best representation of a place or region. Growing up a stone's throw from Newton County, I can tell you that the base world Harington describes is not the Ozarks I experienced. I was expecting an elevation of the Ozark Mountain experience rather than a trip through the regional gutters. Too sad.
