A college photography textbook. A photographer's bible. Excellent. Many editions available - of course the later ones like 7th edition on have more about digital, but basics are well covered in all editions. I have personally given this book to two aspiring novices and still use it myself.

Great starting point
This book, although a text book, has great starting points for the untrained eye. As a begining photographer I still found this book to be very helpful. Explanation of terms and features of cameras was excellent.
