This is greatly to the patient's advantage from a psychological as well as an economical and logistical standpoint. The important advances here in terms of new equipment and techniques include laparoscopy for sterilization and biopsy, the use of ultrasound in pregnancy termination, to name a few. Other diagnostic procedures (breast, vulvar and vaginal biopsies; urethrocystoscopy; and endometrial biospy) and other local therapeutic maneuvers (eg, conization) can also be performed in the office, as well as minor procedures performed in the first trimester of pregnancy (eg, amniocentesis).
