This is one of my all-time favorite books in any genre - I read it about twice a year. This is the story of one elderly woman, repressed all her life, who decides to stay behind when her community is relocated to another planet. Liberated from the expectations of others, she finally blossoms into the creative, decisive women she was meant to be. Then she meets the intelligent native species of the planet, and her adventures really begin!
This book has the best LAST line of any book I have ever read. Don't be put off by this - the book is a real feel-good read for anyone who loves to see a spirit finally take wing and soar. As Ofelia is dying, she wonders whether her son will ever learn what really became of her, or whether the "company" will lie to him. If I remember correctly, the line reads, "It was a good joke either way, and although Ofelia did not, as she had once planned, die alone, she did die smiling."

I have to say that I was one of those that would give this book high marks. If you like stories like in the Tom Hanks movie "Cast Away" you might like this book too. It isn't action packed but it was extremely interesting to me.
Cold corporation puts human workers on what was supposed to be uninhabited planet. They're there for years without thriving, so the corp. pulls everyone out to move them to another planet.
One elderly lady, after a lifetime of serving her hateful husband, long dead, and her hateful, ungrateful son, schemes to stay behind and miss the last shuttle out.
She spends a long time just enjoying her life of doing what SHE wants, for the first time ever. Raising a garden, etc.
But then she encounters aliens that weren't supposed to even be on the planet. Eventually she learns they are super intelligent, and they come to love her as family and to respect her, something totally new to her life.
Then, humans return to the planet, and trouble insues. Will the aliens be overrun or will they be given respect as the sentient beings they are?
Read to find out. I just loved the story and Elizabeth Moon's writing.

I'm not gettin' the buzz on this one.
I find it very hard to find a good book to read when I've finished a really fantastic one. I may be in that place now or maybe I'm just in a "negative mood" and have a hard time finding anything to like. At any rate, I'm turfing this one. To be fair, sci-fi is not my chosen reading genre (although I do enjoy it on film) however I occassionally like to choose things to take me out of my comfort zone (don't want to get Alzheimer's, ya know!). The premise of this tale seemed very interesting and it might get better but I'm will let this one go at page 156. I've began to think of the book as an unpleasant chore. The story is incredibly dull. I thought it might pick up once Moon gave the indigenous life a voice but frankly the way she did it just confused me--I had to reread that particular section three times to figure out what was going on. Maybe I'm missing the lack of emotional interaction between characters as Ofelia is mainly alone on a planet and when she finds she is not she is unable to communicate well with her fellow inhabitants.
The book has received rave reviews from other readers so I may pick it up at another time (probably not any time in the near future though).
