While this book is useful for the model ship builder, it is not for the beginner to learn how to build a model. The vast majority of the information concerns the dandy-funk of a model (the capstan, depth charge racks, etc.) and not the main components (the hull, the masts, the rigging, etc.) One good point for new builders is the hundreds of pictures and explanation of nautical equipment. However, for a beginner, there are many other more useful books.
One other good/bad point is that this book covers ships from the 19th century to modern destroyers. The vast majority of the material is for ships of sail.
For more experienced builders, there are several good points. First, this book does contain many drawings of detailed parts, such as a clews and lnyards between deadeyes, that are not shown in most model building kits. There are a number of suggestions and hints apparently developed by the author which are very helpful, although they are buried in the text. Perhaps the best part is the plans included with the book. (In the 1961 edition, 6 plans are included.)
Overall, if you are trying to build your first model, buy another book. If you are on your third or fourth model and want to get the details right, this book will help you.
