The Sleeping Sphinx, first published in 1947, is a detective story by John Dickson Carr which features Carr's series detective Gideon Fell. This novel is a near-supernatural whodunnit. Dr. Fell solves a terrifying mystery when someone or something has been moving the coffins around inside a sealed mausoleum. Some people think that Celia has inherited the family taint of hysteria, but it takes the combined efforts of Donald Holden and Gideon Fell to explain Margot's death and the moving coffins. Frank Gruber (1904-1969) was an enormously prolific author of pulp fiction. A stalwart contributor to Black Mask magazine. Here, is presented Beagle Scented Murder wherein a couple wise guys running a detective agency and not above "creating" a little business but soon become involved in a bloodcurdling hunt when a muder case lands in their laps. Finally, Hilda Lawrence's tale, "Death of a Doll" is presented. In the five years of its existence Hope House, a Home for Working Girls, had met and vanquished one emergency--a fire in a wastepaper basket. Then Ruth Miller moved in and was found, only a short while later, a limp and broken body in the courtyard. Monica Brady, the Head, and her assistant, Miss Angeline Small, met at midnight over hot chocolate and small cakes to decide what to do. The official verdict was "fell or jumped, " and Ruth was a mousy girl with no friends to ask uncomfortable questions. They came to the conclusion that the scandal would shortly die down.
