I've never read Tamora Pierce before, but I was really impressed with this new series as an adult reader. The character was interesting, smart, and tenacious, and the fantasy world of Tortall was incredibly detailed and fun to visit. The world of the Provost's Guard, the "Dogs" and their trainees, the "Puppies," was fascinating. I can't wait for the next book in the series! (I tried the Alanna series but found the writing clunky by comparison with this book.)

I'll never stop reading this author
I was pleased to see another installment in Pierce's Tortall universe. I first read Pierce's Song of the Lioness quartet in 4th grade; the author's writing was then and still is engrossing regardless of the reader's age. "Terrier" explores a different side of Tortall than we've previously seen, and offers a heroine with her own quirks, flaws, and personality. Beka Cooper may not be educated, but she makes up for it in her relentless work ethic. Pierce's writing is simple in the good way, and never redundant. She is an expert scene-builder, with a flair for imagery that doesn't detract from the advancement of the action. I look forward to the rest of this series.

A Great Return to Tortall!
Although this book is marketed as juvenile fiction, it appeals to older readers as well. I've long been a fan of Tamora Pierce's books, since first reading "Alanna: The First Adventure" when in junior high, and I wasn't disappointed by this new book. Ms. Pierce takes us back to Tortall, years before Alanna appears on the scene, and into the heart of the lower city and its slums. What a different picture this is from the palace and the world of the nobility that the Alanna books highlight! It's a refreshing change and a nice addition to the "historical annals" of Tortall!
Like Alanna, Beka, the heroine of the book, is a strong girl with a good heart and slight flaws that make her lovable and believable. She does not have the "Gift" of magic but does have some special abilities (and a familiar purple-eyed cat!) that include being able to hear the ghosts of people caught in between this world and the next. As a Puppy (a trainee in the Provost's guard), she puts that ability to use as she searches for an enemy that has robed himself in the disguise of a common horror tale character, the Shadow Snake, and threatening and terrorizing the people of the Lower City. Her roots in the slums and love of its people, her strong sense of right and morality and her dogged pursuit of justice all add to make Beka one of the best trainees the Guards have seen and leave the reader with a sure sense of great things she must be on her way to accomplishing as the series develops! I, for one, eagerly await the next book.
