When the Best American series added comics to their repertoire last year, fans of graphic novels may have seen it as another indication of this genre being accepted by the mainstream. However, while this volume is impressive and very handsomely produced, it contains too many experimental and fringe works to successfully appeal to a broad audience. While one may certainly find many gems hidden in this collection, plodding through the many more insignificant, pretentious pieces that are simply over burdened with the minutiae of the artist?s uninteresting existence may evoke yawns instead of applause. The two heavy handed and, frankly, boring introductions do not help much either. This is probably more for the diehard admirers of graphic fictions, and even they might find themselves flipping through some stories rather quickly here and there.
