This is Bart Yates's third novel, and anything he writes is worth reading. The problem with this book is that it is about the "distance" between people, which means that the characters have to be people who are difficult to like. That puts a distance between the book and the reader. The female narrator is so obviously unpleasant that her acid humor doesn't work--nice try, Bart, it was almost a good idea. Another problem is that the more reasonable characters in this book get marginalized. I will read "Leave Myself Behind" a second time. "Distance" will stay on my shelf as part of my Bart Yates collection, but I won't read it a second time.
