Dan Billany's The Trap, first published in 1950, still stands - in the opinion of M.R.D. Foot - as 'one of the most powerful English novels to come out of the [Second World War].' It echoes the wartime experiences of its author, who is believed to have died in 1943 while on the run from an Italian POW camp, but not before entrusting the manuscripts of The Trap to safekeeping. The book's narrator, army lieutenant Michael Carr, tells of his early years in Cornwall, of the girl he met and loved there, and of the hard times her family endured between the wars. These troubles and joys give way to the tragedy of war, and the book's narrative becomes one of comradeship, suspense and fighting in the North African desert. 'The Trap is an outstanding novel by a writer of natural genius... written with great force and honesty... profoundly impressive.' Times Literary Supplement

Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Very Good. A first edition copy of this powerful novel drawn from the author's experiences during the interwar period. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. The Trap follows the story of a young man during the interwar period, and is thought to be inspired by Dan Billany's own experiences. In 1942, Billany was taken as a prisoner of war in Southern Italy, and then released in 1943, but was never found and was presumed dead in 1944. The manuscripts of The Trap were left in the care of a farmer, and eventually sent to Billany's parents once the war was over. The Trap was published to great acclaim. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean but a little age toned, with spotting to the fore edge. Dust wrapper remains bright, but is a little chipped to the head and tail of the spine and sunned to the spine. Very Good.
