Martin Cruz Smith is known for novels that are peopled with fascinating, flawed and three-dimensional characters. Arkady Renko himself has plenty of his own problems. His prosecutor keeps him bored to death, and he's struggling with the onset of middle age. His longtime partner and friend Victor Orlov returns as well, beginning with an arrest for public drunkenness. And the mysterious 15-year-old chess prodigy, Zhenya, whom Arkady shelters and attempts to parent, has a larger-than-usual role to play in Three Stations.

I really like Arkady Renko. Have all his adventures. But, I didn't much care for the way this story was put together. Was Martin looking for a way to make the series fresh? There wasn't a lot of dialogue in this one. And the story kept jerking along & wasn't comfortable. Arkady fans will read it anyway, but I'm also hoping (like those other reviewers) that the next adventure is more like the ealier ones. (I'd hate to see Arkady go down for good, but if the caliber doesn't improve, I'll agree with that other reviewer that it would be kinder to his fans that he go out gloriously!)

This latest in the series is not one of the better ones. Smith seems to be growing tired of the series. Perhaps he should put Arkady down. After all, he already put a bullet in his head. Send the poor bastard back to Cuba and out to pasture...Of course if he chooses to write another one, I'll pick it up and read it.

Not up to par
I would only recommend this latest Renko book to those who have read the rest of the series. All of the other novels in this series were so good that they could stand alone. I would salivate when a new chapter in this series would be released. It seemed disjointed, and somehow flat in comparison with its predecessors.
