The book deals with the tale of 2 cities which are seperated by a river with one prepared for CD (civil defense), the other not. What happens before, during and after a atomic bomb attack. Remember, this was written in the late 1950's, so the words nuclear warfare wasn't being used at the time. The story tells what's happening to various people in the prepared city, so it's not just a case of being prepared, bombs dropped and dealing with it. This makes the story so much more interesting. Like the banker who falls into the hands of a loan shark due to gambing debts and pushing his strong willed daughter to marry a rich womans son and what happens afterwards. Alas Babylon was the first WW 3 book I read as a teenager and I believe this book ranks right next to it, it's that good.
