But when members of the People's Republic swarm in from the cities to bring modernity and productivity to the grasslands, the peace of Chen's solitary existence is shattered, and the delicate balance between humans and wolves is disrupted. Only time will tell whether the grasslands' environment and culture will ever recover... Wolf Totem has been a sensation ever since it shot to the top of the Chinese bestseller charts in 2004. A beautiful and moving portrayal of a land and culture that no longer exists, it is also a powerful portrait of modern China and a fascinating insight into the country's own view of itself, its history and its people.

this book was certainly a landmark, for me, but will probably not be as well received by others as it was for me..It's easy to get caught up in the "customer service" mentality in the world, where we expect to have our expectations met at every turn. truth be known, It was hard to read for me, but not for lack of academia, yet for the honesty with which it was written.

Not just Global Warming!
Wolf Totem is semi-autobiographical/fiction about life in Outer Mongolia and the destruction of the delicate balance of the nomadic life, green pastures, and wildlife not because of "Global Warming" but in the name of "modernization". We need to respect Nature which allowed ecosystems to coexist for thousands of years and understand how easily lost and irretrievable when the balance is tipped.
