I admit I was surprised by this book. I was expecting it to be less substantial than that of Concqueror. Again, the Murrays have some part in the story as James was a foster child in the family. Thus, again some of the same "mate" ideals and same boring love scenes (blah) as in the other Howell books (if you are romance lover in your books - you can read just one Howell novel - it will never be necessary to read any other - every book has EXACTLY the same man with same skills and same scenes - just a different name). However, it is easy to overlook in this book. Because this book is set up as something more than some of her other less substantial murray/cameron stories. This book is based in the need for revenge, to clear ones name, as well as to possess what was once rightfully their own. Thus the back story is substantial and the promise of plot twists great. That James has been declared an outlaw (for murder) and his lands stripped from him gives his story purpose. He is a determined man, on a mission. He must be sneaky and infiltrate the castle holds to gain access. That is where the story truely begins. That he finds love would be given as there is always romance involved. The story is not about that though. It is about the waiting, the finding of information to clear his name, to claim his right as father, as laird and as an innocent man. Read this story to find out if he gets there (is there any doubt?) and how it does it. For that is the story. I recommend as this is a plot driven novel, not a romance duplicate only novel. I will read the rest in the series - but I am hoping that there will be more stories like this one where the plot outshines and diminishes the copied text of Howell's other books.
