Tracing the evolution of these dark-glazed ceramics from the 5th to the 15th century, this catalogue focuses on wares from the "Golden Age, " which encompasses the Song (960-1279), the Jin (1115-1234), and the Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties. The influence of these ceramics extends to the present, as potters around the world seek inspiration in their exquisite shapes and glazes. The essays in the book focus on recent archaeological excavations that shed light on the dating, development, and evolution of various kiln sites and examine the relationship of these wares to Japanese ceramics. Scientific analyses, full-color reproductions, and complete catalogue entries round out this informative volume. -The exhibition traces the evolution and development of Chinese brown-and black-glazed ceramics from the fifth to the fifteenth century. Including more than one-hundred and fifteen pieces, the exhibition will be the first ever in the United States to examine these exquisite wares. Thirty-three of the very best Chinese brown-and black-glazed ceramics from the Harvard University Art Museums' collection form the core of the exhibition; the remaining eighty pieces are loans from museums and private collections in the United States. The exhibition is organized by Robert D. Mowry, Curator of Chinese Art. Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown-and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400 is made possible, in part, with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. The publication of the catalogue has been facilitated by a grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation. --with a bonus offer--
