S tatsu (active circa 1600-40, master of the Tawaraya studio, produced folding fans to great acclaim. In a sense, the fan was the tool that formed his aesthetic sensibilities. Today, he is best known for his exquisite folding screens, including the Freer Gallery's Waves at Matsushima and the "Floating Fans" screens, housed in Japan's imperial collections.
